Basic Steps

Running the Demonstration Version of ShellSIM online could not be simpler, following 3 basic steps illustrated below.

  1. Initialise Model, defining the culture area and conditions, plus shellfish husbandry;
  2. Run Model, normally taking less than 30 sec; and
  3. View Results, both tabulated and graphed, whether for production yield or environmental impact for different populations in separate sectors, or for all produce combined.

Links are provided to Guidelines at every point.

1. Initialise Model

in 3 basic steps, defining

  1. Model Output Specifications as:
    1. the desired interval between calculations made by ShellSIM (Timestep);
    2. how many days ShellSIM should run for (Start Day and Stop Day); and
    3. whether to change default values including the expected ratio of carbon:nitrogen:phosphorous and shellfish mass for which physiological rates are standardised
  2. Culture Area and Conditions as:
    1. culture area proportions (Length, Width, Depth); and
    2. environmental conditions at the upstream boundary layer (Aerial Exposure, Current Speed, Salinity, Temperature, Dissolved Oxygen, Ammonium and food availability measured as concentrations of Total Particulate Matter plus one or more of Particulate Organic Matter, Chlorophyll and Particulate Organic Carbon)
  3. Shellfish Husbandry for:
    1. up to 2 populations in each of Sectors 1 and 2, the second population in each Sector upon clicking on the bar named Population 2 at bottom of page; those Sectors being formed upon vertical division half way along the Culture Area Length, such that water passes in serial laminar flow from Sector 1 to Sector 2 as illustrated in the Figure below; when
    2. for each of those populations, the Species, Ploidy Status, Culture Type (Bottom, Rope or Trestle), number of shellfish upon Initial Seeding, number of shellfish upon any Subsequent Seeding, initial size upon seeding as either Shell Length or Total Fresh Weight, Harvestable Size, Harvest Fraction and any Mortality, which may be defined according to shell lengths of < 1 cm and > 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 cm

2. Run Model

by clicking Run ShellSIM

3. View Results

by clicking on Tabular Results or Graphical Results, respectively, where:

Tabular Results are divided between:
  1. Populations in Sector 1, with options to access results for each population upon clicking tabs for:
    1. Individual Shellfish Growth, Size and Condition;
    2. Cumulative Environmental Impacts of Individual Shellfish;
    3. Population Dynamics
  2. Populations in Sector 2, with options as for Populations in Sector 1; and
  3. Total Production and Environmental Impact, with results for the Culture Area as a whole upon clicking tabs for Marketable Produce and Impacts on Water Quality
Graphical Results are divided between:
  1. Populations, with options to simultaneously view results for populations in each Sector upon clicking tabs for:
    1. Individual Shellfish Growth, Size and Condition;
    2. Cumulative Environmental Impacts of Individual Shellfish;
    3. Population Dynamics
  2. Total Production and Environmental Impact, with results for the Culture Area as a whole.
